Who Moved?
I was sitting with a lamp on behind me creating a soft shadow of me on the floor. As I gazed at the floor my eye caught a white object about the size of a grain of rice. The object appeared to be moving and I thought “Is this a bug crawling at my bare feet?” I watched for more movement and, sure enough, it seemed to be moving. I wondered what kind of insect it was. I watched as it moved back and forth and sideways in an interchange with this soft shadow on the floor. And then it hit me: the “bug” was not moving… the shadow was… and the shadow was me! The bug was merely a tiny piece of white paper. I was observing the relationship between the piece of paper and my shadow that moved with my slight shifting.
It made me think of my relationship with God. Through the years, I have grown sometimes closer to God, sometimes just sideways, sometimes stagnant. Some of my beliefs have fluctuated like that over the years as well. I would describe my relationship with God as dynamic and interactive, with movement. But one thing hasn’t moved over time. God.
God is the same today as yesterday and tomorrow, multiplied by millennia. He is unchanging in perfection, even as we change personally, as groups, even as churches, for better or worse.
Selections from the 13th chapter Hebrews affirms this:
This doesn’t scare me as life around me changes, and even as I change. God is my anchor in stormy seas or calm seas. I might get tossed about in the wind and waves a bit, but my foundation is secure, not on my own accord, but rather because of who God is, and what He’s done for me in Christ. I’m reminded of a song, “Jesus, You’re my firm foundation, I know I can stand secure, Jesus You’re my firm foundation, I put my trust in Your Holy Word, I put my trust in Your Holy Word.”

6 So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
7 Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. 9 Do not be carried away by all kinds of strange teachings.

So when waves of life get a little choppy, we can:
4832 Ponderings...
Where is God when your life gets a little choppy? Do you come to Him?
Who are the people in your life that you can go to for encouragement and support?
Who needs your love and support today?
- Pause and take a breath. No need to jump out of the boat.
- Talk to God and express our fears and/or anxieties. Be honest.
- Recall His faithfulness, both in your life, and through many, many examples in the Bible.
- Read the Bible, His Word. Read some Psalms which so beautifully capture the ups and downs, fears and failures of life…and the hope we have because of our great God.
