I Have A Dream ...
This devotion is reposted from January of 2021 ...
These iconic and meaningful words spoken by Martin Luther King Jr, given during the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, 1963”. Have been replayed countless times. They are etched in history and will be played many more times today. With the observation on this MLK holiday, I thought of the many dreams that God has used during all time.
You see in all these Dreams God’s plan became clearer and people were shown how the Gospel was to work in their time and all time. And just like those dreams, Martin Luther King’s dream were about seeing God work in that time as well as all time. Here is a portion of his speech for you to reflect on …

- Dreams from Joseph about his brother, the famine, the Pharaoh. God used Joseph. – Genesis 37-42
- God speaking to Samuel at night – not a dream, but God calling to him as he began to rest, calling him to service. – 1 Samuel 1
- Dreams given to Jesus earthly father Joseph to keep Jesus safe and travel in a certain direction. - Matthew 2
- The vision given to Peter to realize God sent his son for all people. - Acts 10 & 11

“I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted (Yes), every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain (Yes), and the crooked places will be made straight (Yes), and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed [cheering], and all flesh shall see it together. (Yes Lord)
This is our hope. (Yes, Yes) This is the faith that I go back to the South with. (Yes) With this faith (My Lord) we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope. (Yes, All right) With this faith (Yes) we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation (Yes) into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. (Talk about it) With this faith (Yes, My Lord) we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together (Yes), to stand up for freedom together (Yeah), knowing that we will be free one day.
This will be the day, this will be the day when all of God’s children (Yes, Yeah) will be able to sing with new meaning: “My country, ‘tis of thee (Yeah, Yes), sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. (Oh yes) Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride (Yeah), from every mountainside, let freedom ring!”

There are other sections I could share of his speech, but I choose this one. You see the freedom he speaks of was not just a freedom for people of Color, but for all people. You see his dream was that we can all live together, pray together, struggle together, stand up for freedom together and know that we will be free one day. His dream is a dream we are still desiring today, maybe highlighted again in recent days.
I have a dream … that this day we will realize that this freedom is found only through life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. That this day and each day moving forward we will humbly come before our Savior, thank, praise, and live for Him. To let Jesus’ truth become our guiding force and change the way we live together and with each other.

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5:16

What does this dream look like in your life?
In your family’s life?
In your neighborhood?
In your schools, work, and teams?
