Confidence
David is a well-known figure, author, musician, and leader in the Bible. Much of the book of Psalms was written by him. In these Psalms, David expresses many emotions, fears, joys, and most of all, his faith. Oftentimes, David’s writings are a response to a situation, challenge, or even wondering about God.
We have highs like “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.” Psalm 136:1
We have sorrow in search of comfort like we see in the familiar Psalm 23.
Read the first 5 verses of Psalm 69 and identify some of the things David is feeling.
1 Save me, O God,
for the waters have come up to my neck.
2 I sink in the miry depths,
where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters;
the floods engulf me.
3 I am worn out calling for help;
my throat is parched.
My eyes fail,
looking for my God.
4 Those who hate me without reason
outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause,
those who seek to destroy me.
I am forced to restore
what I did not steal.
5 You, God, know my folly;
my guilt is not hidden from you.
Have you ever experienced some of these emotions in the circumstances you find yourself in? I sure have.

Here, David is describing helplessness. What are some of the causes David lists? What sometimes gives you a feeling of helplessness? What specific phrase can you identify with?
David makes a colorful plea when, in verse 3, he says he feels “worn out calling for help”. What do you think he means? Have your concerns or fears ever left you exhausted?
Jumping down a few verses we see this transition and statement of faith from David:
13 But I pray to you, Lord,
in the time of your favor;
in your great love, O God,
answer me with your sure salvation.
Why can David so boldly come to God in prayer? David knew God saw all his hurts, fears, folly, and sin. Was he afraid of God? Doesn’t seem like it. Is he angry with God? Seems like he’s more upset about his circumstances without blaming God for them. One more emotion seems to come out here: confidence. Confidence in who God is, how He loves David, and that God promises to care for him.
That’s how God looks at you. He loves you, He wants His best for you, and He has restored relationship with you through Christ. Because of this, we can have the same confidence that David expresses.
