From the Source
What has been your experience with the Bible? Perhaps you’ve never looked in it. Perhaps you were encouraged (coerced!) to read and memorize it as a child. Or perhaps in the past, or right now, you are drawn to it as a source of truth and direction. If that’s the case, it is good for you!
The Bible is a valuable resource in many ways. Here are a few:
The Bible is Instructional and provides us with knowledge about God and the world in which He has placed us. The Bible tells us that it is “able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work (1 Timothy 3:15-17).”
It’s devotional. You will find an almost endless resource for deepening and strengthening your relationship with God through the Bible, and especially in the 150 chapters in the Book of Psalms. Here’s part of one:
4 Show me your ways, Lord,
teach me your paths.
5 Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.
6 Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love,
for they are from of old.
7 Do not remember the sins of my youth
and my rebellious ways;
according to your love remember me,
for you, Lord, are good. Psalm 25:4-7

The Bible is protective. Among other topics, the book of Proverbs contains an abundance of sound advice and counsel in wise living. It cautions about dangers and gives positive direction for your life in general, and your faith life in particular. Like this:
My child, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will prolong your life many years
and bring you peace and prosperity.
Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:1-6
The Bible is history. The Bible is also an accurate account of history and geography. It tells of towns that for many years people believed didn’t ever exist. Then, through archaeological digs, they were discovered!
The Bible gives family trees. The most well-known is that of Jesus. But is also documents Egyptian kings and Roman rulers.
But without a doubt, the main purpose and ultimate strength of the Bible is in Telling the message of God and His redeeming love for us through Christ.

The Bible says of itself, “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1:18).”
It encourages to tell others about this life-changing promise: “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15).”
God says His Word, the Bible, “goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:11).”
And what is that purpose? The Bible doesn’t give us every detail of everything that took place in those early Bible times. In fact it says, “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book (John 20:30).” However, it assures us that, “these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name (John 20:31).” And that is really what the Bible is all about!
