Stop the World I Want to Get Off!
Stop the World I Want to Get Off!
Perhaps you’ve never heard the phrase, “Stop the world I want to get off!” If you dig through the vault of the 1960’s you will find a play and movie of that title. It’s done in a rather humorous style you might only expect in the 60’s but the basic premise is whenever the main character runs into adversity, he wants to run away from it.

Have you ever felt that way? This feeling can be caused by busyness, adversity, relationship challenges, bills, politics, and you may add many other reasons besides. Sometimes life seems a little overwhelming and we just want to take a break, make a change, or run away.
This Psalm was written by David as he faced a conspiracy so powerful that all his friends abandoned him. Here’s a portion of it:
Psalm 31
1 In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
in your righteousness deliver me!
2 Incline your ear to me;
rescue me speedily!
Be a rock of refuge for me,
a strong fortress to save me!
3 For you are my rock and my fortress;
and for your name's sake you lead me and guide me;
4 you take me out of the net they have hidden for me,
for you are my refuge.
5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;
you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.
Though in anguish during this very tough time, David expresses hope and conviction to trust a great and mighty God, capable of managing everything David was facing. This was not a message of despair; it was a message that surpasses the circumstances we face as we stay focused on our Lord and Savior of the world: Jesus.
4832 Ponderings:
How would you describe David’s the frame of mind?
What kinds of emotions is he expressing?
What is the hope expressed in this Psalm?
