What's In Your Window?
As you gaze around the room you find yourself in, pick a window. Have a good look at it. You may need to get closer to it to do that. First, what do you see when you look at your window? You may not be able to see anything because the blinds or drapes are closed and preventing you from seeing. Or, you may not be able to see clearly through your window because it is dirty, cataracted, cracked, or even broken with a piece of cardboard covering it.
Now, what do you see when you look through your window? What’s out there? What do you enjoy seeing, and what do you not like to see?
The Bible comments on staying alert and being watchful of your thoughts, actions, and outlooks on life. First it warns to be cautious of distracting or negative influences, “Son of man, you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people (Ezekiel 12:2).” Then the Bible encourages us to be mindful, watchful and anticipating God’s work in our lives, “But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it (Mathew 13:16,17).”

Sometimes we want to see clearly but it’s as if there is dirt on the window. The dirt prevents us from having a clear view of what’s out there. The dirt may be distractions, temptations, fear, busy schedules, or something else. It’s hard to see clearly when there is so much interference.
There is something else that gets in the way of us seeing clearly. It’s sin. We live in a sinful world, and we are sinful beings. That sin clouds our clear vision of seeing God for who He really is and how He is at work in our lives. The Bible tells us that we can’t fix that vision but God has done so already, letting the light of the Gospel shine brightly into our lives. It’s as if He sends a window cleaning crew to wipe away the dirt and grime of our lives. A classic hymn, Amazing Grace, declares “I once was blind but now I see.” Trust God to clear the distractions from your window in order to see more clearly His direction, empowerment, and love He has for you!
