Wish list
“Blessed are the poor in Spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matt. 5:3
“Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” (Psalm 103:1-2)
It’s been a season of “wishing.”
As a child when I was asked, “What’s on your wish list?” I would proudly share the itemized page of gems on my “wishlist” from the printed catalog that came in the mail late in November. Each year, sitting on the living room floor in front of the huge Christmas tree, “wishing” for all that would bring happiness.

As a child I had everything I needed and began working early in my life to “add to the treasures” of what I had. There was never a time that I did not have the essentials of life: A roof over my head, food on the table, and more.
A modest life, yes, but all the essentials. My spirit was full! We worshiped each week, went to Wednesday night or Saturday morning Bible study for additional training and rarely missed Sunday school as well. There were many traditions that my parents taught me that have come with me in adult life:
The goodness of God. It is easy to forget how good God is! During this time, it is easy to forget that God has given us everything and more! He is faithful! God has been so, so good! It is very fitting to praise His name. Today my wish list is not about “things” but about spiritual growth of family. It is about children being faithful to their calling, growing in the Spirit, and raising grandchildren that also know Jesus. It is about God’s word planted in the hearts of little ones. It is in coming together with family and friends that my Spirit is full, and overflows to praise the goodness of God!

- Work hard, work now, play later
- save more than you spend
- the first part of what you earn goes to God
- be generous to your neighbors.

Poor in Spirit does not mean without, but humble, humbly coming before God, knowing that “every good and perfect gift comes from the Father of Lights (James 1:17).” Thank you, Jesus, for all that you have given! Thank you, God, that you continue to care for your people!
