Part of the Group

What traits do you share with other family members (looks, preferences, personality, hair color, etc.)? Do you look fondly on those similarities, or do you prefer to stand more independent? Do you tire of people saying, “You look just like…!”
We may look fondly on family resemblances but may also want to establish some independence as well. That may come from a desire to prove ourselves, or have freedom of making our own choices. Sometimes, we may think a little more highly of ourselves than we ought!
We may look fondly on family resemblances but may also want to establish some independence as well. That may come from a desire to prove ourselves, or have freedom of making our own choices. Sometimes, we may think a little more highly of ourselves than we ought!

There is a passage in the Bible that speaks to this topic. Paul encourages us to “not think more highly of ourselves than we ought (Romans 12:3).” He is not criticizing healthy self-esteem; he is just pointing out that we are part of groups whether we admit it or choose to participate in them. Think of people groups you find yourself in. Perhaps they are: Co-workers, neighbors, family, church, self-help, or hobby groups.
Paul describes our faith family as a body with many members. Think about the positives and challenges of being part of a faith family. How are these pros and cons any different than those that come with a nuclear family unit?
He concludes his admonition with “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves (Romans 12:9,10).”

It is good to know and remember that it is God who brings us together and empowers us to live in community, with its challenges and joys. He does this because He wants to live in community with us which He has established through Jesus’ death and resurrection.
