Timing
Do you sometimes feel like you are a slave to time? There are always many things you would like to do, but even more things you need to do, and there doesn’t seem to be time for it all. We make choices either deliberately (“I am not going to do thing A, so I have time for to do thing B”) or consequentially (“I am going to do thing A,” which later puts you in a tight spot because you are now out of time to do thing B).
We make many choices about the use of our time, and we sometimes must navigate the responsibilities that demand time of us. Time may see like a rare commodity we just don’t have enough of. Let’s pause for a moment and look at time from the perspective we read about in the Bible.
First, all time belongs to God. He is eternal and created everything, including us. God doesn’t need to measure time as we do. He has given us this chronological method to help us stay organized and be better able to comprehend what is happening around us. God, however, is simultaneously looking at the past, present and future. He has a different perspective (For a helpful look at this concept, see Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. Look in your index for the chapter entitled “Time and Beyond Time”).

With this in mind, it might be helpful to ask some of these questions as you make decisions about your use of time:
Ask God to guide you in your use of the finite time He has given you in this earthly time frame. Think both short-term and long-term.
- What is really important that requires the investment of my time?
- God blesses us with downtime. How can we most effectively use it? That might include, rest, recreation, prayer, people interaction, etc.).
- In the long run, what am I doing today that will be important to me, others, and God’s will for my life?

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12-14
