Power
His divine power has given us everything we need for a Godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. (2 Peter 1:3-4)
What makes you feel powerful? Is this a good feeling?
What makes you feel empowered? Is empowerment different than powerful?
Often thinking of power reminds me of younger days and watching cars squeal out of a parking lot to go and race down the “main drag” of a small town in the Midwest. The “power” of engines roared and we all watched, delighted by the impromptu race that was happening. Of course, we were also watching for the police officer that would surely be coming to check on us! Today’s verse is referring us to God’s power that resides in us to live out the “race of life”. This race is minute by minute, day by day, and full of twists and turns.

The power within us is the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. This empowers us to thank God for daily pleasures, like the rising of the sun, and the privilege and opportunity to live our life in service to others. I have wondered what that service looks like. It is as different as the faces of mankind! God’s promise to each of us is that He has provided for our every “need.” Participating in the divine nature means leaning into the power, setting our thoughts mindfully on what the divine nature is. It is peace (that transcends understanding); joy (in the midst of pain or sorrow); hope (for the sun to come up tomorrow); calm (in the midst of strife). It is more than all of these words. The divine nature that we participate in leads us in life to seek a path of service to others, to continue looking for the opportunity to share the journey of life!
