Challenges of Forgiveness

Why is Forgiving such an ongoing challenge? Why do we have a hard time forgiving others? Why do we hang on to offenses and bring them up days, weeks, month, years later? Is it hard to accept that God, through Christ, has truly forgiven us? Does God keep a record like we do? Or has he removed completely as it says in Psalms?
