Ephesians 4:24–32 paints a clear picture of this transformed life: “Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness” (v. 24). Paul goes on to describe what that looks like—speaking truthfully, managing anger righteously, working honestly, and building others up with our words. This is not a list of moral checkboxes but a call to reflect God’s heart in our daily interactions.

In this passage, Paul urges believers to reject bitterness, rage, and slander, and instead to be kind, compassionate, and forgiving—just as God forgave us in Christ (v. 32). That last phrase is key: we forgive and show grace not because people deserve it, but because we’ve received it. This mirrors the story of the woman caught in adultery in John 8:2–11, where Jesus demonstrates the radical forgiveness and restoration that characterizes the “new self” life.

In John 8, the Pharisees bring a woman before Jesus, caught in the act of sin, eager to condemn her publicly. Their aim wasn’t justice but a trap—hoping to catch Jesus between the law of Moses and His message of grace. But instead of condemning her, Jesus quietly writes in the dirt and then says, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her” (v. 7). One by one, her accusers walk away. Then Jesus, the only sinless one, tells her, “Neither do I condemn you… Go now and leave your life of sin” (v. 11).
This encounter shows us both grace and truth—hallmarks of the new self. Jesus didn’t condone her sin, but He didn’t condemn her either. He offered her dignity, a second chance, and a call to transformation.

We are often quick to speak harshly, slow to forgive, and ready to judge. But Ephesians 4 challenges us to live differently. Verse 29 says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up.” This doesn't mean ignoring wrong, but confronting it in love, just like Jesus did.

Putting on the new self means leaving behind behaviors driven by fear, pride, or vengeance. It means embracing kindness, humility, and grace—even when it’s hard. This can only happen when we’re daily renewed by the Holy Spirit (v. 30) and grounded in the truth of Christ’s mercy. When we live like this, we not only honor God—we also become safe places for others to experience His love. Like Jesus with the woman at the temple, we can be vessels of truth and grace, helping others rise from shame into new life.

So today, ask yourself: am I living in the old self, or putting on the new? Do my words heal or harm? Am I quick to forgive as I have been forgiven? Let Christ reshape your heart—so that through you, others can encounter the transforming power of grace.

4832 Ponderings:

What is one thing this passage is challenging you about?

What positively motivates you to live your life as these verses indicate?

What challenges you in life to live contrary to these verses?

What resources do you have available to assist you in living as these verses indicate?

Closing Prayer:
O Lord, we are called to follow you. Grant us the courage and strength to answer that call. Empower us to act with justice and to love and serve one another. Do you prefer something new and different, or the stability and dependability of things from the past?
As we look ahead – whether to the next season of life or to eternity – our hearts often wrestle with a mix of hope and uncertainty. In Revelation 21:1–6, recorded by the Apostle John, we’re given a profound glimpse of what lies ahead for those who belong to Christ, and it reshapes how we view both our current reality and our eternal future.

John writes, “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth… the first heaven and the first earth had passed away…” (v. 1). This vision doesn’t just promise an improved version of the world we know – it reveals a complete renewal. In a world marked by suffering, injustice, and decay, this is a deeply comforting truth: God is not merely patching up the old but making all things truly new. As believers, we live with that assurance. Though we still walk through challenges and trials, the future is not uncertain for us. It is anchored in God’s promise.

Verse 3 offers a stunning picture: “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them.” This is the heart of the Christian hope. It is not merely golden streets or pearly gates, but the presence of God Himself. Heaven is not just a destination; it is a reunion. God’s desire to dwell with His people shows us that eternity is about relationship, intimacy, and restoration. What was lost in Eden will be fully restored.

Even now, we taste that reality in part. Through the Holy Spirit, God dwells in us and with us. Though we live in a world not yet made new, we carry a piece of that promised future with us today. Each act of forgiveness, each step of faith, each glimpse of God’s peace is a shadow of the fullness to come.

Verse 4 continues, “‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain…” This is more than comfort – it’s a promise of complete healing. Every sorrow and loss we’ve carried will be undone. For those who grieve, suffer, or long for relief, this promise offers hope not only for the life yet to come but also strength for today. We don’t endure in vain. Every hardship we face now will one day give way to joy.

In verse 5, Jesus exclaims, “I am making everything new!” Notice that He doesn’t say, “I made everything new,” but rather, “I am making…” The process has already begun. Jesus is at work now in our hearts, in the Church, and in the world – renewing, redeeming, and transforming. We live in the “already, but not yet.” We see glimpses of heaven now, even as we await its fullness.

In verse 6 Christ declares, “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega…” Our hope is not wishful thinking. It is rooted in the One who began all things and will bring all things to completion. So we live with anticipation—not fearfully, but faithfully. The future, both now and in heaven, is bright because God is making all things new.

4832 Ponderings:

Have you heard the expression “He/she is so heavenly-minded that he/she is of no earthly good”? Sometimes you desire to joyfully laugh with the person in your acknowledgement of a special occasion. Sometimes you want to send a more serious, thoughtful expression of who this person is and what they mean in your life.

The Bible is full of “greeting cards” to and from God and His people. Here’s a message to God from David:
“I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.
I will be glad and rejoice in you;
I will sing the praises of your name, O Most High." (Psalm 9:1-2)

That’s a pretty great way for David to proclaim his thanks and praise to God!
David expresses wholehearted thanks to God for His character and faithfulness. This passage reminds us that thanksgiving isn’t just a seasonal event or something we do when life is smooth. It’s a lifestyle, an attitude, a daily response to God’s presence and goodness.
Pause for a moment or two and think about one “wonder” that God has created, for which you are especially thankful and appreciative. What words would you use to tell a friend about what you are experiencing? What words would you use to express to God your thanks and appreciation?

Sometimes it feels that our thankfulness toward God feels drowned out by our busy world: noise, notifications, deadlines, and distractions. The call of Psalm 9 is simple and timeless: it’s a heart posture that looks for God’s hand in every situation.

For instance, imagine someone juggling two jobs to make ends meet. Life leaves little room for rest, let alone worship and prayer. But in the quiet moments—maybe during a lunch break or bedtime prayers with a child—there may be a brief opportunity to thank God for strength, for health, for the small joys of laughter and shared meals. That’s Psalm 9 lived out today.

Later in Psalm 9 we hear encouraging words regardless of the circumstances we face. David says:
"The Lord reigns forever;
he has established his throne for judgment.
He rules the world in righteousness
and judges the peoples with equity.
The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble." (Psalm 9:7-9)

David declares, “I will be glad and rejoice in you.” David experienced joyful times and extremely difficult times. His response is not about circumstances, but in God Himself. In a world where happiness often depends on happenings, Psalm 9 reminds us that joy is rooted in something deeper.

A person battling cancer may prayerfully ask for returning to health, and feel some relief, not because they feel good, but because they know God is with them. We can find joy not in the diagnosis, but in the God who walks with us through it. That’s the beauty of Psalm 9: we rejoice in God, not just in what He gives.

As you read through the descriptions of God’s activity, which actions are past, which are current, and which are to come?

Try this exercise as you seek application of David’s words. Read Ephesians 6:18:
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.”

Now read through it again and make note of each time you see the word “all.” Does this give you some thoughts about how your prayer life can enhance your life and that of others?

Whether you're in a season of plenty or hardship, Psalm 9:1–2 offers a simple but profound call: Give thanks. Speak of His deeds. Rejoice in Him. Sing His praises. In doing so, we not only honor God—we also remind our own hearts of His enduring goodness.

Thankfulness isn’t outdated. It’s the heartbeat of faith, still alive and relevant today.

4832 Ponderings:

What might become a distraction to your desire to continually thank God?

Sometimes memories cause us to think back about people for whom we are thankful. Do you remember what kinds of things you were assigned? Also, when younger, did you have a clear career interest? Did it change over the years? Why?

In the book of Isaiah, we read an ominous call to work and ministry. The speaker is the prophet Isaiah, speaking on behalf of God, and the message is directed to His people:

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor;
he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; Isaiah 61:1

That is quite a calling isn’t it? If God spoke that to you today, you might feel just a little overwhelmed! In our fast-paced, productivity-obsessed world, many of us find ourselves overwhelmed and overworked. Whether we’re managing jobs, family, studies, or simply trying to stay afloat emotionally and spiritually, the weight of it all can leave us feeling exhausted. Surprisingly, this is not a modern problem. Even Jesus' disciples experienced moments of burnout, and Scripture offers profound wisdom for us in these seasons.

Mark 6:30–44 tells a story that resonates with anyone who has ever felt the pressure of unending demands. After returning from their first mission trip, Jesus' disciples were excited to share everything they had done and taught. They were likely tired, physically and emotionally drained from ministry, yet surrounded by constant need. In verse 31, Jesus says, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Jesus acknowledges their exhaustion. He doesn’t demand more; He invites them to rest.

But the rest is interrupted. As they withdraw by boat, the crowds follow. By the time they reach their “quiet place,” a massive crowd is already waiting. Jesus, also tired but filled with compassion, begins to teach them. Eventually, He performs the miracle of feeding the five thousand. This moment, known widely for the miracle, also offers deep spiritual encouragement for the overworked heart. Can you relate to that feeling?

First, we see Jesus’ deep compassion – not only for the crowd but also for His disciples. His initial invitation to rest reminds us that God is not a taskmaster; He cares about our well-being. He knows our limitations. When we feel burdened, He does not condemn us; He invites us to come away with Him.

Second, we see that Jesus doesn’t send the disciples away to solve everything alone. When the disciples point out the crowd’s hunger, He doesn’t simply ask them to fix the problem in their own strength. Instead, He involves them in a miracle that He performs. “You give them something to eat,” He says, and tells them to go inventory the meager amount of food available. Why do you think Jesus did this? Was it to show them the great need that only He can address? He takes five loaves and two fish, blesses it, and multiplies it beyond anything they could have imagined!

This is where it hits home. Often, when we feel overwhelmed, it’s because we believe everything depends on us. We hold tight to our meager “loaves and fish,” believing we have to stretch them further than they can go. But Jesus shows us that when we offer what we have, however little, it is He who multiplies it.

If you’re feeling overworked or burdened today, take heart. Jesus sees you. He invites you to step away, even briefly, to rest with Him. And when the demands don’t stop, know that He doesn’t expect you to meet them alone. Look around you for the people God is bringing to help you. Ask for their help. He calls you to offer what you have and trust Him with the rest.
You are not called to carry every burden or meet every need in your own strength. You are called to walk with Jesus, who provides compassion, rest, and miraculous provision – right in the middle of life’s busiest moments.

4832 Ponderings:

What are ways we might shy away from doing an important or assigned task, like the feeding of all these people?

Sometimes people’s expressed, felt, or immediate needs are different than their real or greatest needs. One of those special things is how they encourage us to look backward (past) and forward (future) to help us have confidence today (present).

Here are some examples:

Psalm 69 begins with: “Save me, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck. I sink in the depths, where there is now foothold.”

And ends with: “Let the heavens and earth praise Him, the seas and all that move in them.”

Psalm 70 begins with: “Hasten, O God, to save me; Oh Lord, come quickly to help me!”

And ends with: “You are my help and deliverer; O Lord, do not delay.”

Psalm 64 starts with: “Hear me, O God, as I voice my complaint; protect my life from the threat of the enemy.”

And ends with: “All the people will fear; they will proclaim the works of God and ponder what He has done.”

Often in the Old Testament we are called upon to remember something of our past. Why do you think this is? Can you think of a negative situation from the past that ended positively?
Remembering God’s work from the past can positively affect your attitude today. How so? We have a good example of this in the New Testament book of Hebrews. In Hebrews 10:32 we read, “Think back on those early days when you first learned about Christ. Remember how you remained faithful even though it meant terrible suffering.” Later in verse 36 we read, “Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will.”

Has there been a time in your life when you have been tempted to give into something you knew was wrong, not healthy, or contrary to God’s word, but seemed appealing or easier at the time? We are here encouraged to trust in God’s power and promise in these challenging times. God’s Word promises “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined the things that God has prepared for those who love him (I Corinthians 2:9).”

4832 Ponderings:

As you consider the passage from Hebrews earlier, can you think of a “then and now” time in your life that makes you grateful, more at ease, etc.?

What do Jesus followers look forward to in the future, regardless if the road is tough or easy?

Closing Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, our souls; our inmost beings, praise Your holy name. How did it go? If you can’t think of that, how about when someone else tried to impress you?

In the Bible, the prophet Micah comments on trying to impress God. Have you tried to do that? I have. Maybe if we just sound sincere enough, devoted enough, kind enough, generous enough, it will make a position impression on God. Here’s what Micah says:

What can we bring to the Lord?
Should we bring him burnt offerings?
Should we bow before God Most High
with offerings of yearling calves?
Should we offer him thousands of rams
and ten thousand rivers of olive oil?
Should we sacrifice our firstborn children
to pay for our sins? Micah 6:6,7

These were some of the examples of how people in Old Testament times might have tried to impress God. What are some modern-day equivalents? What might we think we could do to impress God? Verse 7 is exaggerated. Why do you think it is expressed in exaggeration? How do we try to convince God and people about our dedication, worth, generosity, or capabilities?
God responds to all this bravado very simply in verse 8:

No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good,
and this is what he requires of you:
to do what is right, to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.

How does verse 8 nicely respond to the previous verses?
God has plans for us to do great things and express kindness and love. But it is because He loved us first and gave His only Son, Jesus, to pay the price for our since and establish a new relationship with us. He is not impressed; He is a loving God that intends His best for us. In response, we are free to live in positive ways, love others, and worship God creatively and extravagantly.

A well-known theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer noted that sometimes Christian believers can mask their struggles with sin for fear of being criticized or disliked by others. Bonhoeffer says, “The end result is that we remain alone with our sin, living in lies and hypocrisy. The fact is that we are sinners!”

What do you think? Forgiveness is possible but wiping out the memory is not. The regrets can pile up. Baggage from the past weighs us down as we drag it into our future.

One of the many things I love about God is that he can redeem these situations. He can and he does make something good come out of them. He teaches me to grow through these times - helping me mature as he molds my character and thinking. So I ask for wisdom, remembering his promise in James 1:5, "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." Then I know he is guiding me to make the right choices which helps me avoid situations where I need redo's.

As I read Rahab's story in Joshua 2, I can visualize this huge headline on it -
God's Power of Redemption.

Rahab was a prostitute in Jericho when she met the two spies Joshua had sent into the city to check it out before the Israelites attacked. Rahab made the courageous decision to put her life on the line for the spies when she hid them from the men the King sent to kill them. She lied to the king's men telling them the spies had gone out of the city so the kings men quickly went in pursuit just as the city gates closed for the night.

This all could have gone quickly bad for Rahab! Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.” – Colossians 3:1–4 (NIV)

In our fast-paced, digitally saturated lives, this command can sound nearly impossible: “Set your hearts and minds on things above.” How do we do that when we’re flooded with news updates, job pressures, social media, and endless to-do lists? Setting your heart and mind on things above is a good and honorable thing, but what about the daily chores of life: laundry, work, paying bills? Or more serious: illness, death, conflict?

This short passage in Colossians gives us both the reason and the roadmap for a mindset rooted in eternity. The author, Paul, starts by reminding believers that they have been "raised with Christ." This is not poetic language – it’s a profound truth about identity. If we truly believe we have been spiritually raised with Christ, then our priorities, decisions, and ambitions should reflect that new life. But that’s a daily battle. Our culture says identity is something we choose or create. Scripture says it's something we receive in Christ.

Today’s challenge is not only to embrace that truth but to live it out in environments that constantly pull us away from it. Whether it's the drive for success, the need for approval, or the comfort of consumerism, we’re surrounded by “earthly things” vying for our focus.

Paul gives a twofold instruction: “Set your hearts…” and “Set your minds…” on things above. This isn’t about ignoring earthly responsibilities, but about interpreting them through the lens of eternity. Work, family, finances – these are real and important. But they must be informed by a higher perspective. We set our hearts on the truth of God’s promises, and that leads to setting our minds on His will. For example, setting your mind on things above at work might mean valuing integrity over advancement. It might mean seeing your coworkers not just as colleagues but as people loved by, and in need of, Christ. In your relationships, it could mean choosing forgiveness over bitterness, even when it's hard.

Paul continues with the mysterious phrase, “your life is now hidden with Christ in God.” In a world obsessed with visibility, likes, and personal branding, the Christian life is often lived in obscurity. The fruit of the Spirit—love, patience, kindness—isn’t always flashy. But God sees, and one day, as Paul reminds us, “you also will appear with Him in glory.”
That future promise gives us strength today. It happened during an Old Testament celebration called Pentecost and most Christians recognize it as the beginning of the Christian church. It also has an important message for us today.

The disciples were waiting for something they didn’t fully understand. Earlier, Jesus told them they would be receiving the Holy Spirit (John 20:21,22). Jesus had told them to wait for the “gift” the Father promised. They obeyed, not knowing when or how it would come. Sound familiar? Many of us are in seasons of waiting—waiting for direction, purpose, healing, or breakthrough. Pentecost reminds us that God's timing is perfect and His Spirit arrives not just with answers but with power.

When the Holy Spirit came, the disciples began to speak in languages they didn’t know, and people from various nations understood them. It was more than a miracle of speech—it was a miracle of connection. In today’s world, where divisions based on race, language, and culture often dominate headlines, the Holy Spirit still works to bridge those divides.

Consider how technology gives us unprecedented global reach. A church in Brazil can livestream a service to believers in New York, Atlanta or Norway! Technology allows us to hear something in a language we do not understand while reading subtitles automatically translated into our primary language in real time. What you are reading right now can be accessed anywhere in the world! When empowered by the Spirit, today’s technology allows for modern versions of Pentecost—vehicles to communicate the gospel across borders and barriers.

But let’s get even more personal. Have you ever felt prompted to speak encouragement into someone’s life, even when it felt awkward or risky? That may be the Spirit calling you to action. Maybe it’s praying for a coworker, calling out injustice, or simply offering a listening ear when someone is hurting. The Spirit gives us boldness to speak God’s truth in love—even when we feel inadequate.

The crowd who witnessed this Pentecost event asked, “What does this mean?” That question is still relevant. When the Holy Spirit shows up, things may get messy, unconventional, or hard to explain. But that doesn’t mean it’s not real. Like the crowd, some will respond with awe, while others may scoff or criticize (v. 13). That’s okay. We’re not responsible for people’s reactions—we are only called to love them and to share the Good News of Jesus with them.

So, what does this mean for us today? It means we don’t have to live powerless, disconnected, or afraid. The same Spirit that empowered Peter to preach to thousands is available to you—to bring clarity, courage, and compassion in your everyday life.

As you go through your week, don’t underestimate what the Holy Spirit can do through you. Wherever you may find yourself, the Holy Spirit is there to guide, protect and empower you to live as a Jesus follower, and to be willing to engage with others as His representative here and now.

You will enjoy reading this Bible account in Acts 2:1-13. Pentecost isn’t just a past event—it’s a present reality.

4832 Ponderings:

What do you find most interesting about the ability to speak different languages to such a diverse crowd (Acts 2:4-8)?

Is it possible to be speaking the same language as someone but not really “speaking their language?”

When has God enabled you to do something that you didn’t think you could do?

If you were to ask the Holy Spirit to accomplish His purpose in your life, what might He do?

Closing Prayer: Come, Holy Spirit, and fill us with your love. Open our eyes to see the presence of God all around us, in the stillness of sacred space, in the busyness and noise of our cities, and in the joys and celebrations of our lives. Come, Holy Spirit, and comfort those who grieve. Grant them the peace that only you can bring. Come, Holy Spirit, and bring wholeness to the sick. Come, Holy Spirit, and ignite a fire in our bones, a passion for all people that the world may be transformed and renewed. Come, Holy Spirit and work through me!
Faith, Fear, and Courage

When you travel, do you acquire souvenirs for yourself or to share as gifts when you get home? Anything usual or unusual to share? There is an account in the Old Testament book of Numbers (yes, that’s the name of a book), about 12 men who were sent on a fact-finding trip. They brought back evidence, and had two distinctly different suggestions regarding next steps. The Israelites are on the verge...

They were at the border of the promised land! What thoughts and feelings might they be experiencing? They weren’t just walking for pleasure. They were on a mission!

Numbers 13:17-31 speaks volumes about human nature, leadership, and the power of perspective. In this passage, Moses sends twelve spies—one from each tribe of Israel—to scout out the Promised Land of Canaan. What they find is both promising and intimidating: a land flowing with milk and honey, but also one inhabited by giants and fortified cities. Both reports were accurate. What’s the difference? The reports they bring back divides the people. Ten spies instill fear with their pessimism, while only two—Joshua and Caleb—speak with faith and courage.

This chapter offers a timeless lesson on how our outlook can shape our destiny. The Israelites had seen miracles -- plagues in Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, manna from heaven, and yet when faced with a new challenge, fear overtook their faith. Their refusal to believe in God’s promise led to 40 years of wandering, and delayed blessing caused by disbelief.

We can easily apply this story to daily life. How often do we stand at the edge of opportunity and retreat because of fear? Like the Israelites, we may see the potential but feel overwhelmed by the obstacles. This could be starting a business, pursuing a new career, confronting a toxic relationship, or stepping out in faith. The giants we see might not be literal, but they are just as daunting -- debt, rejection, failure, or self-doubt.

Imagine two friends considering launching a nonprofit. One focuses on the red tape, lack of funding, and risk of failure. The other sees the need, the potential to help others, and trusts that each step forward will bring solutions. Like Joshua and Caleb, that second friend, although acknowledging risk, is driven by faith. Which perspective is more likely to inspire action?

This chapter also challenges us to be voices of courage, not fear. Moses listened to all twelve spies, but it was Caleb who stood up and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it” (Numbers 13:30). Leaders today—whether in churches, communities, or businesses—must be willing to speak truth and encourage forward momentum, even when others shrink back.

Think of a teacher who sees potential in a struggling student. While others might give up, that teacher advocates, supports, and inspires belief. Or consider a manager who encourages innovation despite the risks. These are modern-day Calebs—people who recognize difficulty but refuse to let it define the outcome.

Numbers 13 reminds us that faith is not the absence of fear, but the choice to trust despite it. We are all scouts in life, constantly encountering unknown territories. The question is, will we see the promise or only the problems? Read the entire account and let it serve as a call to courage—to trust that if God has brought you to the edge of something great, He will lead you through it.

“The will of God will never take you where the grace of God will not protect you.”

4832 Pondering:

What’s one “giant” in your life you’ve been avoiding?

As you face this “giant,” ask yourself: am I reacting like the ten spies or responding like Joshua and Caleb?

Closing Prayer: Dear Lord, Your blessings are new and rich every day! Give us eyes to see, and hearts to appreciate Your great work among us. Let us not be afraid of the challenges of this life that we encounter each day. Give us boldness to step into the lives of others who are in need, or in need of a relationship with You. Give us the courage to share our lives and Your truth with them in love. In Jesus’ name. Amen

Sometimes I do. Everything is moving and changing so quickly...and its all just going to get faster. If you've been on this planet as many revolutions as I have, it's extremely tough to keep up. I'll admit it - I can use all the help I can get.

I'm sure King Solomon felt this way as he was talking to God in 1 Kings 3: 9, "So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong."

God honored that request by making Solomon the wisest man who has ever lived.

Whenever I think about all the wisdom I need to navigate this world, I am reminded that God tells me at the beginning of the book of James that he wants to give me a generous amount of wisdom. I just need to ask for it. "If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind." James 1: 5 & 6.

Did you catch that last part? God has promised so, when I ask for wisdom, I must believe that I am receiving it. I have to pray expecting an answer. After I pray, I need to focus on what God is saying to me in his word and keep my eyes open for confirmations of how he is guiding me. There are no such things as coincidences - they are God-incidences. God is answering as we watch things happen in our lives and associate them with our prayers. God is moving, he is orchestrating his plan. We can miss it and become a 'wave of the sea' if we're not carefully attentive to what's happening around us.

One of my regular prayers is asking for wisdom. God has promised he will give me plenty.

And he has. God is always faithful. But it's not a magic button and 'poof' I have the answer or my issue is resolved. God speaks to me daily through his Word and gives me direction. I have to listen to him and do what he says. As Jesus was concluding, he instructed his disciples to get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. When the crowds had gone, Jesus went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone. Meanwhile, the disciples in the boat were far from land and being battered by waves as they fought the strong wind. Near daylight Jesus came walking toward them on the sea!
Let’s stop here for just a minute. A large crowd was learning from Jesus. That’s a great start and very beneficial to all. The gathering ended and Jesus sent the disciples off on a boat while he went up the mountain to pray. Jesus provides a good example of spending time with God as we think about and process our days. Another positive learning point!

What started as a good day changed for the disciples. They were in a boat as a violent storm rolled in. It’s bad enough to encounter this during the day but by this time it was dark. They had a long night ahead of them. But just before daylight, Jesus came walking to them on the water. Jesus could do anything he wanted. Why do you suppose he chose to arrive in this way? Was it to create a teachable moment for his disciples (and for us too!)? At first it wasn’t so positive: “But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, ‘It is a ghost!’ And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, ‘Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.’”

Jesus and the disciples had had an exhausting day! Look back through the account and list some of the events and activities that take place. What observations can you make about what Jesus does, what His disciples do, what the crowds of people do?

An important point for us to remember is that Jesus is right along with us throughout our journey: the positive times and the challenging times. We are never alone! Because of his presence in our lives, we can step out in faith and confidence that God will direct our paths.

Closing Prayer – from St. Francis of Assisi:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

That is, until he encountered Jesus. Paul gives a short synopsis of the confidence of his faith in Christ in a letter he wrote to Christ-followers in the city of Philippi:
“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” Philippians 3:20–21

Paul was anxious to tell others about Jesus, and he chose his approach carefully. Once, when he was speaking to the crowd who had gathered, he began with:
“Athenians, I see how extremely religious you are in every way. For as I went through the city and looked carefully at the objects of your worship, I found among them an altar with the inscription, ‘To an unknown god.’”

Paul engages people at their point of interest. He notes they are religious, and so much so that they even have an altar to a religious figure they don’t even know. He starts at that point saying, “What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you. The God who made the world and everything in it, he who is Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by human hands, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mortals life and breath and all things.” He goes on to introduce them to the person of Jesus. You can read the entire account at Acts 17:22-28a.

As we seek to apply Paul’s message to our lives today, what are some of the known and unknown “gods” that are worshipped today? What are the things that challenge us, or distract us? What are the temptations that our culture and environment offer as meaningful?
Paul always comes back to his main message. Look what he says about God and what he has done for us through Jesus. As you embrace his message, what are the implications for us in our lives today?

Closing Prayer:
Dear Father in heaven, sometimes our actions betray the words we speak. Sometimes our inaction hides the love we have for You and others. Remind us that we are Your redeemed, forgiven, freed and empowered children! Let us not forget this, rather, help us to step into it and let this truth guide our everyday actions and encounters with others. For instance, inclement weather (snow, thunderstorms, tornado watch). How do you respond to that kind of weather?

Can you think of a time in your life when you made a decision that ended up being life-changing? In Psalm 25 we hear from David as he pleads to God to provide direction for his life. He wants to know the right path to take.

Psalm 25:1-10
Of David.
1 In you, Lord my God,
I put my trust.
2 I trust in you;
do not let me be put to shame,
nor let my enemies triumph over me.
3 No one who hopes in you
will ever be put to shame,
but shame will come on those
who are treacherous without cause.
4 Show me your ways, Lord,
teach me your paths.
5 Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long.
6 Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love,
for they are from of old.
7 Do not remember the sins of my youth
and my rebellious ways;
according to your love remember me,
for you, Lord, are good.
8 Good and upright is the Lord;
therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
9 He guides the humble in what is right
and teaches them his way.
10 All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful
toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.

First, David declares his confidence in God rather than himself (vv1,2). Elsewhere in the Bible we hear of this confidence when it declares that God is “the author and perfector of our faith (Hebrews 12:2)”. It’s what He has done for us, not what we do for Him.

Interestingly, David uses the word shame 3 times in verses 2 and 3. We feel shame when we have done something wrong. David acknowledges that he has done wrong but steps forward in God’s forgiveness. He wants to live as forgiven, not condemned and that is exactly what God has done for us through Christ.

David asks for guidance on his path (v4,5). David knows he is called to serve God; he wants to understand how to serve. Can you relate to that? Most of us can! We have the will or desire to step in to God’s calling. We can trust that He will lead us, even as we pursue that search.
David reflects on the past (vv6,7) and acknowledges his present (v1). More importantly, he asks God for His future (vv4,5,9,10). We can too!

Closing Prayer: Dear Lord, we put our trust in You alone. Because of You, we embrace hope now, in the future, and for eternity. Show us Your ways and teach us Your paths. Guide us in Your truth. As You have erased the sins of our youth, help us not dwell on the past, but move forward along the path of hope in confidence. Guide us and teach us, we pray. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Adapted from Psalm 25:1-10
